How the crypto code works
A crypto QR code encodes a payment request URI. Bitcoin-family currencies use BIP-21 with an optional amount and label; Ethereum uses EIP-681 with the value expressed in wei.
Check the address character by character before printing. A QR code makes a wrong address just as easy to scan as a right one, and the transfer is irreversible.
Questions
- Which wallets can read it?
- Any wallet that supports BIP-21 or EIP-681, which is nearly all mainstream ones, including hardware wallet companion apps.
- Do I have to set an amount?
- No. Leave it empty and the payer chooses the amount in their wallet.
- Why does the Ethereum code show a huge number?
- EIP-681 requires the value in wei, so 0.01 ETH becomes 10000000000000000. Wallets display it back as ETH.
