How the whatsapp code works
A WhatsApp QR code is a wa.me link in disguise. Scanning it opens a chat with your number, optionally with a message already typed, which makes it excellent for shop windows, receipts and support desks.
The number must include the country code and nothing else — wa.me rejects spaces, dashes and the plus sign, so we strip them for you.
Questions
- Is this the same as the QR code inside WhatsApp?
- No. WhatsApp's own code links devices or adds contacts. This one opens a chat with a specific number from any camera app.
- What if the person doesn't have WhatsApp?
- The link opens a WhatsApp web page prompting them to install it. Consider an SMS code as a fallback for a general audience.
- Can I change the message later?
- Not without generating a new code — the text is baked into the link.
