How the text code works

A text QR code carries raw characters with no scheme in front of them. The scanner simply displays what it read, which makes it the right choice for serial numbers, asset tags, machine instructions and short notes.

Because there is no compression, every character costs capacity. The byte counter next to the field shows exactly how much of the current QR version you are using.

Questions

Can I use accents and emoji?
Yes. The payload is encoded as UTF-8. Emoji cost four bytes each, so watch the byte counter on long messages.
Why does my code get denser as I type?
The QR version grows to fit the data. More characters means more modules, which means you need to print larger.
Will the phone open a link inside my text?
Most scanners detect a URL inside plain text and offer to open it, but behaviour varies. Use the URL type if opening a page is the goal.
