How the wi-fi code works
A Wi-Fi QR code encodes the network name, the security type and the password. Both iOS and Android offer to join the network the moment the camera recognises the code, which is why cafés and offices tape one to the wall.
Passwords with semicolons, colons, commas, quotes or backslashes are the classic failure case. We escape all of them, so the password that goes in is the password the phone receives.
Questions
- Does it work on iPhone and Android?
- Yes. iOS has supported Wi-Fi codes since iOS 11 in the native camera; Android since 10, and earlier via Google Lens.
- What about hidden networks?
- Tick 'Hidden network' and we add H:true. Without it, phones will not find an SSID that is not broadcast.
- Does WPA3 need something special?
- No. Select WPA — the same payload covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3; the phone negotiates the strongest option the router offers.
- Is the password visible to anyone who scans it?
- Yes, by design. Anyone who can scan the code can read the password, so treat the printed code as the password itself.
